NEED YOUR HELP: Apps that DO/DON'T work with VPN
  • paigemarieepaigemariee
    2870.00Administrator, Moderator
    Which apps have you experienced (first hand) don't work with VPN? Which apps DO work?

    We'll keep this list updated, so keep the info coming. If you see an app on the "Do" list that you couldn't get to work, let us know. Same for the opposite. Also let us know the devices and operating systems you've tested on.

    For faster resolutions to your most used apps, we recommend that you leave a review/feedback with developers who's apps do not work with VPN. This is something that is quickly addressed and resolved by adding VPN connection support.

    Some of the apps in the "Don't" category have incomplete functionality.

    Do Work:
    Android Browser
    Chrome Browser
    Firefox (no longer works by itself, but you should be prompted to download our FF extension or get it here)
    Instagram
    LinkedIn
    Facebook
    Craigslist
    Dealnews
    Note Everything
    YouTube

    Google Currents
    Google +
    Talkatone
    Tapatalk
    K9mail

    Google Offers
    Google Drive - Upload questionable
    Google Play - Can't download or update
    Google Music
    Google Voice
    Google Movies
    Google Maps - Directions and Navigation don't work
    Google Now
    Google Talk
    Dead Trigger
    TincGUI
    Skype
    Slashtop Remote
    US Bank
    Scramble with Friends

    Folks, we are looking into our options for how to make this work better for everyone, including working with the developers of the apps that don't currently work with Open Garden.

    We need your input here; if you've experienced apps working and not working for you when connected through Open Garden on Android, please post here.

    To help us make sense of your report, please specify what Android device this was on, and what version of Android it runs.

    IMPORTANT: HELP US BRING Google's ATTENTION TO THIS PROBLEM
    GO to http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=33666 and hit the star next to the word "Issue"

    Aside from the Google apps (including the Gmail app, which doesn't refresh when it should), I just installed The Sims Freeplay on my Nexus 7. It will not connect over Bluetooth VPN, requiring Wi-Fi instead.

    We are focusing specifically for Android vpn for this thread. Making a thread for key Windows software that doesn't work would be helpful to have a list of which to test first.

    I understand that apps will need to be updated to function with this kind of network. I just wanted to create a list of what I've found, which I will update as I play with it more. HTC EVO 3D feeding to a Nexus 7 via home Wi-Fi. Basic web browsing works, though much slower than if the tablet was connected directly to Wi-Fi.

    Not Functional:
    - Google Drive (download = no, upload = sometimes)
    - Google Music
    - Google Play Store (connection time out)
    - Google Movies
    - Google +
    - Google Offers
    - Google Now
    - Dead Trigger
    - Speed Test
    - Skype
    - US Bank

    Functional:
    - YouTube
    - Gmail
    - Craigslist
    - Dealnews
    - Note Everyting (upload to Drive = yes, email = slow)

    I must say, despite its shortcomings, I'm liking Open Garden. It's a neat way to share an internet connection between devices. I hope that enough people adopt the platform that app developers start updating their apps and re-working the "network check" step so that they function with the Open Garden connection or that Android updates in the next OS release or whatever is needed to get fully function.

    Remember, it's the apps that are checking/verifying network connection in a manner that doesn't jive with the VPN/mesh network that Open Garden creates.

    @paigemariee,

    Per your comment in my other thread, I got a file to upload to Drive after 2 attempts. Compatibility is part way there, but downloading from Drive is what I need more than uploading.

    Another vote for sticky.
  • Apps that DO work:
    Google Currents
    Play Store

    Apps that DO NOT work:
    Pocket (formerly Read-It Later)
    Speed Test
    CloudOn

    Motorola Xoom
    ICS (Android 4.0.4)

    I like the concept of Open Garden, but it looks like a ton of apps will need to be modified to result in a seamless user experience.

    Hi,

    It seems that OpenGarden hard codes the primary DNS server to 5.0.0.1. Unfortunately, LogMeIn Hamachi uses the 5. net and 5.0.0.1 as its gateway. This creates a conflict. There is no way to configure Hamachi to use a different net.

    Can you make OpenGarden configurable (if needed) to use a different net? I like 6. net.

    Would really appreciate this!

  • Odd that none of these has been mentioned yet:

    No Go:

    Worx:

    On CM10 on a Asus tf300t tablet, connected thru OG to a t989, also with CM10.
  • A lot of the items on the "doesn't work" list work for me. Including netflix, Pandora, sims freeplay, Google voice, and Google voice hack app talkatone, all of the browsers that are listed, and almost every Google service that is listed, google drive, audible, Skype, speedtest, instagram, facebook, YouTube, gmail, and a lot of the other ones listed.

    Again I have no problem what so ever running netflix! And everything else I listed.
  • This is using those apps on an iPad, connceted to open garden off a Droid incredible two.

  • Please, excuse me for possible offtopic but the discussed issue isn't unique for Opengarden.
    In fact apps mentioned above (at least from Google) don't work with BlueTooth VPN neither under 'PdaNet Tablet' nor under 'BlueVPN'. I guess the problem could be in VPN API or maybe in its use in Opengarden, 'PdaNet Tablet' and 'BlueVPN'.
    What if there is a way to fool 'rebel' apps and make them 'think' that WiFi VPN is up instead of Bluetooth VPN?

    Thanx.

    @evil_hamster
    You are correct in your point that the problem is not unique for Open Garden... please check out and STAR the relating issue we filed with Google so they know that this is effecting a lot of users. http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=33666
    The problem is with VPN as a whole, not whether the service uses WiFi or Bluetooth for connection.

    Unfortunately can't agree with you. I tested it before ('playing' with BlueVPN) and tested again today.

    Test 1: Android 2.3.3 (Xperia X10i stock firmware), WiFi VPN (L2TP without L2TP key).
    - Playstore works fine;
    - Gmail works fine;
    - Email (stock) works fine;
    - Browser works fine;
    - Dropbox / Dropsync works fine.
    (forgot to check Skype but I strongly believe that everything it's OK with Skype too)

    Test 2: Android 4.1.1. (Transformer Prime stock firmware), WiFi VPN (PPTP).
    - Playstore works fine;
    - Gmail works fine;
    - Email (stock) works fine;
    - Browser works fine;
    - Dropbox works fine;
    - Skype works fine;
    - FireFox works fine (I'm writing all of this under WiFi VPN mentioned above).

    Thanx.

    Thanks for the tests! Your disagreement turned out to be very helpful in my understanding of how this all works... and proving my argument is much easier now. ;)

    To paraphrase our developer, Greg:
    There are two 'VPN' features in Android: One is built-in support for PPTP, L2TP and other common VPN protocols which has been in there since the early days of Android. The new VPN feature is for applications to implement whatever protocol they want and that's what Open Garden uses.
    The bug that Android has is that it does not register the VPN connection as a path to the internet on its own. It only considers WiFi, Bluetooth PAN, or 3G/4G as valid internet connections. So if an app used the new VPN feature but WiFi was also up, apps would continue to work fine.

    Make sense?
    Paige Peterson

  • That's why I wrote about 'fooling' applications to make them 'think' that there is 'WiFi VPN' ;)

    Tried to follow your advice and leave WiFi on while using Bluetooth VPN in Opengarden mesh networking app but it didn't work for me. With active WiFi interface (not connected to any AP) Opengarden's autoconnect function became very unstable (most of time I had to select 'Connect' option manually) and there were no Internet at all through the VPN connection. I was experimeting with Motorola DROID RAZR MAXX HD (stock JB not rooted) and ASUS Transformer Prime (stock JB not rooted).

    P.S. I thought that 'built in support for PPTP, L2TP, etc.' was based on the same VPN API which is available to independent developers...
    P.P.S. OK. To be more constructive I'll read the docs first and then try to propose someting useful.

    Got some odd ones for you on a current, unrooted, stock Nexus7 '12 and VM Samsung Galaxy S3. Others are on the mesh, but these are the two I use daily.

    Mincraft PE .7.5 & .7.6 WIFI P2P network games to a non-OG device are intermittent. You can see the other game, join, but the game drops after a few seconds. Turning off OG by shutting off the Bluetooth radio fixes the connections dropping.

    Amazon App Store and the Facebook apps both claim there is network but work ok.
